Dear Parents and Guardians:

I am writing to confirm that schools will not be opening on Tuesday, September 2. As you have likely heard in the media, talks to resolve the dispute between the BC Teachers' Federation (BCTF) and theBC Public Employers' Association (BCPSEA) have been unsuccessful. All our schools will be closed onSeptember 2nd  and potentially for the rest of the week.
The mediator working to help the two sides find a resolution has stated that they are too far apart tocontinue talks at this time. This means teachers will be engaged in a full strike starting on Tuesday.

School Operation

While schools are behind picket lines, there will be no instruction and no support staff/CUPE memberson site. School sites will be open, with only Principals and Vice-Principals in the buildings. Since there will not be enough staff available to provide adequate supervision for large numbers of children, we ask that parents make alternate childcare arrangements.

School buses and StrongStart Centres will not be in operation, but we are pleased to report that the separately managed daycares and preschools that rent space in our facilities will remain open. Daycare operators have already contacted the families this affects with details. We appreciate the cooperation of our employee unions and the efforts of our other staff to keep these daycare programs open.

All of us share your disappointment with this news and understand the difficulties it creates for you. We hope for a settlement as soon as possible and appreciate your ongoing patience. Updates will continue to be posted on our district and school websites.

Sincerely,

Monica Pamer, EdDSuperintendent of Schools
