Reading Assessments and Follow Up Supports

In September, we welcomed students back to Hamilton and introduced them to their new classes. In the coming fall months, staff completed reading assessments with all of our students from Kindergarten to Grade 7. We noticed that overall, throughout the grades, reading fluency and decoding skills were a relative strength where as comprehension (retelling, summarizing, responding to text, predicting, questioning, inferencing, and making connections) is an area requiring extra support and practice. At an upcoming Professional Development day, our Teacher Librarian will reintroduce staff to the Adrienne Gear Reading Power book bins that she created for staff to sign out to use with their classes. We noticed that the themes of the book bins aligned with the RFRA (Richmond Formative Reading Assessment) and were a great resource to help our students in specific areas of reading where there was a need for extra support. Another step towards growth in all of our students' reading skills, which will help build their reading comprehension skills, which will help with their understanding in all subject areas.
